Getting in front of a crowd to speak can be quite scary.

Jerry Seinfeld said that if people would rather die than to give a speech then most people at a funeral would rather be in the coffin than deliver the eulogy. Maybe that is more inflated than real, yet you get the point.

Why is it important to get over the fear of speaking in public?

Because when you are able to stand in front of a group of people, whether it is to present a concept at work, a sales presentation to clients or to deliver a eulogy, you want to be competent. When you are competent, you will feel confident. When you feel confident, you will be perceived as more credible and effective. Who would like that?

What if I still get nervous when I have to speak?

You don’t have to be fearless when you speak. That is a myth. You just have to be ready to stand up and deliver despite your fears. Most seasoned speakers are a little nervous before taking the stage, including myself. It’s normal and actually a good sign because it means you care and that you want to do a good job. A little fear / nervousness is a good sign.

What can I do if I want to become a competent / confident speaker?

I always recommend an organization that I joined over 35 years ago called Toastmasters. Toastmasters is the ideal starting point for anyone who wants to improve their speaking in a safe and pleasant atmosphere. I still enjoy stopping by an occasional meeting to cheer on and support the new speakers giving their, “Ice Breaker” speech.

What if you are a more advanced speaker?

If you are an advanced speaker, then your goal should be to improve your effectiveness and influence as a speaker. I have attended several National Speakers Association events where the best speakers gather once a year to learn how to improve their speaking crafts. The one common thread among the best speakers is, “how can I improve.” You can attend a speaking conference, take an online Udemy Course, or hire a private speaking coach. Another option is to attend the 3 day workshop that I realy enjoyed with the author of, “Steal the Show” called , “Heroic Public Speaking.”

So what do you next?

Write down your goals for improving your speaking skills and commit to taking the action steps that will move you into a more powerful standing among your peers, your clients and the people who you serve.

Are you ready to train? Two things to get you started:

1) Here is the video clip that will give you a quick overview of what to expect in video format. My goal is to expand your video options as we move forward.

2) Remember that this whole process is rooted in constant improvement and or practice. Things will not work and or need to be changed so let me know what is working and what is not.

Have a great day and we’ll see you next week:))
